.IT: IDN domain names available soon – opening to six countries outside the EU
2012-07-05 | Julia Zang
The registry operator of the Italian ccTLD .IT will change its registration rules on July 11. Subsequently, it will be possible to register internationalized domain names (IDN) for the .IT name space. Coinciding with the introduction of IDN domains, the registration space of .IT domain names will be extended.
The Italian Registry announced: 'The it-domains go beyond the European Union boundaries and 'wear' the accent.' This statement is based on the fact that the registry will introduce .IT domain names with non-ASCII characters such as à, â, ä, è, é, ê, ë, ì, î, ï, ò, ô, ö, ß, ù, û, ü, æ, œ, ç as well as ÿ and that it will extend the registration space. To date, only companies and citizens from the EU can register an .IT domain. From July 11 on, citizens and companies of the countries of the European Economic Space – including Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Vatican City, San Marino and Switzerland – will be able to register .IT domains, too.
