Donuts is on a roll. In a recent blog post, the operator of more new gTLDs than any other announced registrations had increased by a third in the year to the end of August. And in November it was announced they were being recognised as the fastest growing technology company in North America, coming top of the Deloitte 2017 Technology Fast 500.
Donuts operates 238 new generic top level domains, which includes the 40 that were acquired when they took over Rightside, both Seattle-based companies. The combined entity has 3.473 million domains under management. And in the year to the end of August 2017, growth in new registration volume (excluding new TLD launches) increased by a hefty 34%. In 2017 alone, over one million registrations were added in 8 months to the end of August.
The top new gTLDs from Donuts are .ltd with 343,000 registrations, .life (164,00) and .live (132,00), being the only new gTLDs with more than 100,000. Donuts have 15 new gTLDs with more than 50,000 registrations and 80 with more than 10,000. Growth across their new gTLDs has been “well distributed” which the registry says is “another sign of health across our entire portfolio, and that the category of new TLDs is beginning to resonate with businesses and consumers.” Renewals are also performing strongly. Their average renewal rate is 71% (weighted for volume, so that little numbers with ultra-high renewals don’t skew the data).
Digging a bit deeper into the data is even more interesting: 184 new gTLDs had renewals of 1,000 registrations or more. In that group, renewal rates ranged from 60% to 94%. This compares favourably with .com, which has a renewal rate that hovers around 73%.
